The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) continues to gain attention in 2019. As more companies globally begin to fully understand the constraints and potential repercussions of GDPR, the need to gain information on how to comply with the regulation grows.
Recent high-level cases are bringing even more attention to GDPR, as companies are being fined up to 4% of their annual business income for failing to comply. Google is one of the companies to be issued a fine for $56 million US for lack of consent on Ads.
But advertisements are not the only source of complaints to the Data Protection Authorities (DPA) under GDPR. So far, the activities from companies that are receiving the most complaints are telemarketing, promotional emails, and video surveillance/CCTV. January 2019 alone saw almost 100,000 official complaints to the DPA for violation of GDPR.
As EU citizens begin to fully understand their rights under GDPR the complaint number will continue to grow. It is imperative companies act immediately to comply with GDPR and understand all the duties owed to EU citizens.
