The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) continues to gain attention in 2019. As more companies begin to fully understand the global constraints and potential data security repercussions of GDPR, the need to understand how to comply with the regulation grows.
Recent, high-level cases are bringing even more attention to GDPR as companies are being fined up to four percent of their annual business income for failing to comply with its data security requirements. Google is one of them — and faces a $56 million fine for its advertising model’s lack of consumer consent.
But advertisements are not the only source of complaints the Data Protection Authorities (DPA) deal with under GDPR. So far, the activities from companies that are receiving the most complaints are telemarketing, promotional emails, and video surveillance/CCTV. January 2019 alone saw almost 100,000 official complaints to the DPA for violation of GDPR’s data security standards.
As EU citizens begin to fully understand their rights under GDPR, the number of complaints will only continue to grow. It’s imperative that companies act immediately to comply with GDPR and understand all the duties owed to EU citizens.
