Review Resilience Before You Need It

By Timothy C. Colwell, Executive Vice President at AOTMP

Would your disaster recovery and business continuity plans still work if a major disruption occurred tomorrow?

The AOTMP Community, including Advisory Council members, Industry Leadership Committee members, subscribers, and thought leadership followers, consistently tells us that disaster recovery and business continuity planning cannot be treated as annual rituals.

Threats change too quickly. AI is increasing attack volume and sophistication. Supply chain issues can disrupt hardware availability. And business dependencies shift faster than most plans are updated. If your resilience planning is stale, your organization is more exposed than it thinks.

The best resilience programs treat continuity as an ongoing discipline. That means regular testing, regular review, and regular involvement from business stakeholders. IT cannot do this alone because the real impact of disruption shows up in operations, customer service, finance, and legal exposure.

A strong plan is not the one that sounds impressive in a meeting. It is the one that still works when people are under pressure.

Actions to take

  • Review DR and BC plans quarterly.
  • Include business leaders in planning and testing.
  • Map critical dependencies and vendor risks.
  • Run tabletop exercises for likely disruption scenarios.
  • Update plans after major organizational or technology changes.

How to measure success

  • Faster recovery during incidents.
  • Fewer outdated assumptions in continuity plans.
  • Improved participation from business stakeholders.
  • Better identification of single points of failure.
  • Shorter time to validate recovery actions.

Resilience should be managed like any other business capability. It needs ownership, cadence, and accountability. If the plan has not been tested recently, it should not be trusted.

About Bearstone

Bearstone is a telecom vendor governance firm founded by Bill Henrichs, Former Head of Telecommunications at Simon Property Group. Managing telecom for a 200+ site portfolio, Bill saw what most CIOs learn: invoices routinely carry unauthorized charges — services billed after disconnect, rates outside contracted terms — that no one is validating line by line. He built Bearstone to close that gap.

Bearstone delivers BearGuard — a managed governance service that validates invoices against contracted terms, surfaces unauthorized charges and variance, and holds carriers accountable for correction. Where TEM platforms stop at reporting, BearGuard begins.

Headquartered in Noblesville, Indiana, Bearstone serves multi-site enterprises — retail, hospitality, and distribution — with 200+ locations or $2M+ in annual telecom spend.
